I reserve the right of all parents to complain about their kids – I think it’s important to blow off steam without fear of judgement. It stops us from losing our minds, and, quite frankly, it’s funnier. There’s nothing hilarious about how wonderful parenthood is.
But I do love it. Very much. For every hard moment, there’s two that make my heart explode. Parenthood can be magic.
Kids are the funniest people you’ll ever meet. The shit they come out with. They’re clever and weird and crazy. They’re pure, in a way that makes you want to cleanse the whole world for them.
They’ll show you the beauty in things you’ve never noticed before. The shape of the clouds in the sky, the way the bus turns the corner, the colour of those leaves and the bird with the red feathers sitting on that branch.
There’s a lightness that comes from spending your day with these small people, who haven’t been hardened and disappointed by the world yet. Children bring a softness to your life you didn’t even realise you needed.
You start to remember the joy of fire trucks and tea parties, superheroes and imaginary phone conversations with dinosaurs, and you wonder why adults have to be so serious all the time.
They’ll also sharpen everything in your life. Your priorities shift and change because all those things you used to care about just don’t seem important anymore.
All those times you’ve felt invisible or powerless in your life will fade away as you become the centre of your child’s universe. You are Mummy or Daddy and you are their hero – you have the power to make them smile, to help them learn, to shape them into the adults they’ll become.
It’s scary and it’s magical.
So, can you tell me something you love about parenthood? What makes it all worthwhile for you?
