Over the past few years I’ve seen a lot of people talk about the commercialisation of Mother’s Day. I’ve seen women say they don’t want presents because ‘being a Mum’ is the real reward.
It’s made me feel greedy and embarrassed about kinda sorta maybe loving Mother’s Day.
But this year I’m saying fuck that.
This will be my fifth Mother’s Day. The fifth year I’ve been able to sit back and relax (haha, jokes that never happens) and celebrate ME.
I work 364 days a year. I get one day of annual leave a year (and I’ve been called in to work every year so far but I’m hopeful this’ll be the year I finally get the whole day off). I work 24 hours on call. I work even when I’m sick or injured. I work from home and on the road and in the shops and pretty much everywhere I go. I have one colleague and he’s helpful but he’s not on site for most of the day. I am responsible for pretty much all of it and I don’t get much in the way of positive feedback.
I HAVE EARNED A DAY. ONE DAY. FOR ME.
Of all the celebrations throughout the year, this is the one I’ve earned. I’ve worked hard for it. I deserve it.
And I want my kids to know I’m a human being and I like feeling appreciated now and then. I want them to know it’s really nice to make someone feel special, to say thank you, to show them you appreciate what they do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sure, ‘being a Mum’ is a huge reward. But I also want a goddamn gift and I won’t feel bad about that.
Besides, my children think giving gifts is just about the most exciting thing in life and watching them watch someone open the thing they’ve made or chosen is magic.
So if you want to celebrate and be celebrated this year, GO RIGHT AHEAD, DARL. You’ve earned it.
