Yep, this is happening again. Photos, not words.
Once a month, I link up with a bunch of cool people who take ten photos from one day and then share it on the tenth of the month (10 on 10. Ten photos on the Tenth. Geddit?). At the end of each post you’ll get a link which will take you to the next person in the circle so you can see what everyone has done. Because it’s just pictures, it’s really quick and fun to follow the links. Except of course when you get to mine…. because I am words. ALL THE WORDS (This is restrained, trust me).
So here’s my day in March:
Wait…shit, I just can’t lie to you. These photos were taken over two days not one. I know, I know, too many words, AND two days worth of photos. Such. A. Rebel. But we had two great Canberra days, with lots of fab photos and I couldn’t/ wouldn’t pick between them.
The Canberra Show
I grew up in Sydney going to The Royal Easter Show, so nothing will ever compete with that agri-travaganza, but The Canberra Show is a pretty good effort. We had such a brilliant day.

“Look, BACK OFF Bob! Breathing on my neck isn’t going make the queue move any faster. And Jesus Christ, grab a mint will you?”

That’s our little friend Edie critiquing the sheep dog’s performance. She thought he showed promise but lacked authority.

THIS. This right here is the stuff of nightmares. Clowns are all levels of fucked-up evil. I’m terrified of them. It’s called coulrophobia and it started when I watched Stephen King’s IT at a slumber party. I feel brave just looking at this photo. It’s like immersion therapy. But…. WHY IS HE LOOKING STRAIGHT AT ME? THE FUCK YOU LOOKING AT CLOWN? CLOSE YOUR MOUTH YOU EVIL BASTARD.

This is probably the third time in his whole life he’s fallen asleep in his pram. Absolutely wrecked.
Dickson Pool (Day two)
My awesome, awesome friend Milanda was down for the weekend and we had a totally indulgent girls dinner on the Saturday night followed by a slightly queasy visit to the pool with the kids in the morning. Sunglasses were firmly fixed, and we may have spent most of the time lying down. Thank God for Dads.

He was playing next to the pole when the fountain turned on trapping him under a cone of water. We laughed and laughed. He didn’t.

Thud and Sophie have been mates since they were born. When I say “mates” I mean, Sophie tries to chase, hug and kiss while Thud runs, hides and cries #notaplaya #girlsgerms
Enlighten Canberra
If I can ever convince you to come and visit Canberra, make sure you come in late Feb/ early March so you catch Enlighten Canberra. For two weeks the landmark buildings of the Capital are lit up and the city puts on a whole program of spesh night time events like after-dark tours of the tunnels under Parliament House, ghost tours, hipster parties in the galleries, cabaret and comedy shows etc. It’s like a two week party with families roaming the streets after dark, having a ball.
Oh, and noodle markets!

Parliament House. I used to work here in the Press Gallery. It’s a truly impressive building and just about the coolest office in the country.
Now this is where you click on to follow the circle: I’m handing you over to my good mate Jo at You Had Us At Hello. She’s tops. You can tell her I said that.
And of course, you should come and join the fabulousness that is my Facebook page. Where I basically ask legal advice from my followers…

How freakin’ good is Canberra at this time of the year Lauren! I can only imagine how our show compares to Sydney Royal…. but like you I am a carni through and through and spent a lot of time {aka cash!!} at the show this year too. Great pictures. Enlighten! Yes! Love your Old Parliament house capture. xo
beautiful photos Lauren! Makes me want to come and visit Canberra!
You should! It’s not as bad as people make out 😉
Those are some top photos Lauren!! Beautiful. I especially love the pram one! xx
Me too!! But then again, I love it any time he’s asleep 😉
Haha let me rustle up a photo of that one time I made out with a sideshow clown. It was that gaping mouth…
Did you just write sideshow clown, gaping mouth and made-out all in one comment? I think I just vomited a bit in my mouth. Don’t ever say “gaping mouth” to me again, you sick, twisted woman.
Fun set of photos Lauren! There’s definitely lots going on in Canberra in March. Y’know I haven’t been to the Canberra Show since I was 9! I’ll get there one year with my bunch. Anyway, nice little promo for our home town. Looking forward to seeing your next 10/10. Xo
Thanks Diana! The show was actually pretty good! I didn’t have high expectations, but it was very sweet and had all the right stuff.
Fantastic photo’s and I love your comments but I wish I didn’t see that clown one this late at night – going to give me nightmares. So lovely to meet you in person yesterday.
I had nightmares for weeks after watching IT. I couldn’t even get into my bed by myself because I was convinced a hand would shoot out and grab my ankle. I had to jump from the doorway.
It was fab to meet you too!!!! xxxx
Lovely pics lady! Your little man sleeping… oh gosh, utter bliss. <3 And I'm not normally bothered by clowns, but holy shit those big open mouths are just creepsville. Glad you had a lovely night out with your friend too, dusty days the following day are so worth it. xx
It was THE BEST night. As we left the restaurant (only because the poor staff were trying to go home) the waiter said to us “my god you girls can talk!”. It was one of those awesome non-stop drink and goss nights. Perfect.
So entertaining and enjoyable, as always Lauren!! Never ditch any of your words – I LOVE THEM ALL !! x
Oh Sally, you’re too kind! I just can’t help myself.
I feel like we could be the best of friends…if not for that whole living on the other side of the world thing, lol! This totally sounds like some of the fun my friends and I would have and talk about. 😉 I love the Parliament House photos! Beautiful!
Haha! Well we can be the best of friends in the online world 😉
Wow, you fit a lot into your weekends. Love the one of Thud and the sun flare, a perfect moment captured x
Thanks Fleur!! Yep, we are always busy. I can’t stay at home because it sends us all crazy. Every single day I need to be out somewhere just to burn off all his energy.
Now I feel bad because I have way more words than you! Laurens clearly love ALL OF THE WORDS!!
That photo of Thud trapped under the cone of water is hilarious. I would definitely laugh and laugh at that.
I haven’t been to the Canberra Show yet, I loved the Royal Easter Show in Sydney as a kid though so I’m just not sure anything can live up to that for me.
You’d be surprised! It’s actually pretty good. Some of the displays aren’t quite as impressive, but it has all the basics. Animals, showbags, some fun shows, sideshow alley…. It’s a pretty fun day out for the kids especially. Five bucks you’ll be there next year with your pram!! xxx
I love your pictures Lauren! And your words too :). Looks you had a great time those two days weekend.
Thanks Erik! We always try to make our weekends a bit special 🙂
Don’t ever quit writing your words! I love them! Those clowns are indeed scary! They are strange! I don’t like them. See ? A nap in the pram it’s always possible! Children are not predictable! Like when you take them at your friends and say, he’s awful and he’s being an angel! And you are the mean mummy! It happens to me all the time, you can feel it in my words? Haha!
xx cathy
Hahaha Cathy, you make me laugh so much!! xxx
Enlighten canberra looks like a great event, we’re going to be doing more road trips for holidays in the coming year and will have to keep that in mind! x
It’s a good one! I love seeing all the families out and about.
Great photos Lauren. Even those evil clowns. The one with your son under the fountain is so cool! x
Thanks Karen! Those bloody clowns are horrendous, but I like the photo…
Love Canberra, and love your monthly circle of love. All the love.
Sorry I had to rush off today! I would love to have had more time to settle in for a proper chat. Next time, okay!?! x
Thank you so much for saying hi Bron, it was so great to meet you! I hope I didn’t make you late. Will definitely hunt you down for a chat next time xxx
Permission to punch me for my slow tech savy ways trying to get our circle happening this morning – damn that time difference for WA. You actually have enlightened me to Canberra. It looks like a pretty cool place. Love your story telling beautiful pictures, (except that clown one, that will no doubt spook me for the rest of the day). You crack me up girl xx
I can see that clown staring at me when I close my eyes. Why is his head turned towards me when everyone else is turned away. Possessed. Evil.
Great photos Lauren. Such a lovely depiction of the fun things that can be done in Canberra. We’re there a couple of times a year as hubby’s family are all Canberrans so you’ve given me some ideas for future visits! ex
It’s a pretty cool place actually! Especially if you like being outdoors. Except in winter…. brrrrr
Love your work as always Lauren! I am another coulrophobe although I try and hide it in front of the kids as they don’t need another reason not to sleep… also your Enlighten shots are amazing x
So great to meet another totally normal person who agrees that clowns are evil and should be destroyed. Agreed that the children don’t need to have evil clown nightmares just yet. They can discover that all by themselves.
Your comments had me laughing out loud, which is always awkward at the office! My office is not however as cool as your old one – LOVE that pic of Parliament House! x
It always made the drive to work a bit easier, you know? When you’re half asleep and wishing you could just stay home, but you drive up the hill and see that building and every time I’d get a bit of a thrill, thinking “I work there!” Loved it.
LOVE the pic with the ray of light / light of my life cliche the most xx
Oh thanks Lisa! He’s too hyper to photograph most of the time. I just have to follow him around and keep snapping and hope for the best. Sometimes it works 🙂
Great collection of pics Lauren. I love visiting Canberra. Will have to try to get to Enlighten one of these days. I don’t mind the clowns but those old dolls (ie chucky) completely freak me out! Xx
Oh yep, any doll that comes to life can go to hell. I can’t handle the evilness of that.
There needs to be allowances made on the 10on10 for video when the opportunity arises to watch little ones trapped under water fountains!
OMG I’m KICKING myself that I didn’t think to film that. Probably because we were laughing so much. He was totally trapped. He was dry under there but knew he’d have to cop a face full of water to get out. It was brilliant.
Hate the clowns. I always found them so creepy! That shot of Old Parliament House is amazing. I never seen Canberra quite like that. Awesome shots Lauren x
Thanks Di! The light shows make the whole place look a bit magical.
I am so coming to Canberra it sounds like fun! I will rug up and one day get to the flower show you have there. I’m scared of Instagram for my kids as I just checked what’s going on with the second teens account and I’m scared! That water bubble was super cool!
Bahahaha… kids on instagram does sound scary indeed!!!
What a great weekend! I love Canberra, and how cool is Enlighten? That picture of Parliament House is awesome!
It looks so great lit up. They also do the National Library and the art gallery and a few others. They do such a great job. The images rotate and each building has about six or seven different light shows. It’s so fun to watch and photograph. I could have done the whole post with just those pics!
Cool weekend. You guys are busy!! I’m with you on the clowns but I love that photo!! Jx
I know, right? The clown is so bloody evil, but it’s a good photo. I can’t decide whether I hate it or love it. Probably a bit of both.
[…] my very first 10 on 10 post. Now be sure to go and check out the delightful and very entertaining Lauren’s photos over at The Thud, and then continue your journey around the Photography Circle until you get back […]
